Becoming a real person again...
Spawned either by my impending graduation or by a major case of senoritis (I'm not sure which) , I've taken up some hobbies/interests lately. I've mentioned in several posts that I've started reading for pleasure again. I've also begun to read the Bible and watch Bible studies online. My mom reccomended this guy:http://www.amazingdiscoveries.org/media-Video-TotalOnslaught.html and he's actually not bad. And I've taken up cocheting lately. Right now I am just crocheting wash clothes, but once I have more time, I plan to learn to crochet more complicated things.

this is claire, and if you're gonna check out that guy, just be advised that he doesn't know the first thing about any science-realted issue, although he sure sounds convincing. Your faith and everything is one thing, but when religious people try to step into other territory, that's completely different.
Just so Claire knows and you also, he is a Professor and yes he does know about science related issues--he used to teach evolution in his classes. And like you Claire, he was an aetheist. He does have a wonderful testimony and Laura--I'm glad you checked him out. Be aware he is 7th Day Adventist and I'm not sure what all they believe but the video's I've watched are great. His explanation of why we worship on Sunday is something else.
I believe we worship on Sundays is because the LORD created the heavens, earth, animals, Adam & Eve all week and on the seventh day he rested. And that is why we worship on Sundays. It is the LORD'S day.
He may have once been an atheist, and used to be a professor and everything, but unfortunately there are bad teachers out there. What the man is or was has nothing to do with the ideas and claims he promotes, which are ill-informed and don't have a lot of evidence behind them. That's essentially what I'm criticizing.
Have you actually listened to him Claire? How much do you know about the Bible? How can you critize something you don't know much about?
Sue, God made the 7th day the sabbath, not the first day (sunday). If you read your history, you will find that it was the roman catholics that changed the sabbath from saturday to sunday. And in their subsequent writings, they freely admitted that there was no reason to change the sabbath, they just wanted to. In that way, I believe the 7th day adventists are correct.
I really wasn't talking about the sabbath thing at all, so not sure where you're coming from there...I'm criticizing what the guy says about science, not what he has to say about the bible. I have read parts of the bible and read some books about it too (remember that Don't Know Much About The Bible book?) in addition to learning about the religion itself from history courses from anotehr perspective. I'm definitely not the most knowledgeable person ever, but it doesn't take a minister to know some of the common stories in the bible. Remember, you read it to me as a kid too. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that a lot of the stories in the bible, and their implications, do not match up with the discoveries we've made in the past few centuries, which this guy doesn't seem to understand properly, or just doesn't want to maybe. I read through the Q&a section, where he's talking about evolution and carbon dating and all that stuff. And he's making some really basic errors in logic as well as ignoring a lot of recent findings. Aside from that, in a couple spots where he can't find any sort of logic or evidence to contort to back himself up, he just says, "Well, you have to believe anyway because that's just what you have to do". If we're talking about what is supposed to be an extremely important truth about our world, and honestly looking for the right answer and not just the one we feel like believing, a little more proof than that is required.
On a similar note, how can you criticize science when you don't know much about it?
Who was critisizing science? Huh? And actually Claire, the Bible spoke of things we've only relatively recently learned about and the Bible was written pretty darn long ago. I went to the site to read about what you were talking about with the evolution and all and sort of got side tracked, geez there is a lot of info on there to read. Anyway, that's why it took me so long to answer.
like what stuff did the bible predict?
